Moscow Swing Dance Society

Question: I’m coming to Moscow soon. Could you advise me where to swing dance?

Answer: The best way to get up-to-date information is to write to us several days before your arrival – we’ll give you our phone numbers to keep in touch. We have several weekly parties. On Saturday there is one at “Polnolunie” club (Bolshoy Karetny, 2) from 9 p.m. till midnight. And don’t forget about “Buff” on Sundays (Lesnaya, 59, 2nd floor)!

Question: I used to do ballroom dancing (rock’n’roll / hustle / tango / salsa). Which group should I join if I want to try swing dancing?

Answer: We have the special group for you – beginners level. The time you’ll spend in it depends only on your progress in dance knowledge acquisition. Find more detailed info here.

Question: I’m 18 (35, 16, 42 and a half, 28) years old. Am I too young/old to swing dance?

Answer: Do you know that Dawn Hampton, one of the most inspirational figures in the history of dance, is more than 80 years old? She keeps dancing and teaching and is one of the most entertaining and musically intuitive people you will see on the dance floor. If you attend her classes you may notice 10-year-old kids there. You see? :)

Question: Do you have season tickets?

Answer: Yes, we have. You can buy them the whole year round. They are available for any class of any teacher in our school. But there is a time limitation of 6 weeks for 10 classes.

Question: May I come to classes in my favourite dress (jeans, kimono, tuxedo)?

Answer: Well, if you want to… But here is a good piece of advice: please do not wear anything hindering your movements. Basically, any casual clothes will do. But if you prefer to keep your style and attend classes only wearing your favourite clothes, nobody minds.

Question: Okay, what about shoes?

Answer: Special shoes are meant for different dances, floors, etc. Practically dancers buy special shoes after about a year of taking classes – when they get enough experience to feel the difference. We’d be happy if you come to your first class wearing Aris Allens, but all you really need is light sports shoes with a soft flexible sole and without high heel.

Question: I’m a guy (girl) and I don’t have a dance partner. What should I do?

Answer: Come and join our classes! You don’t need a constant dance partner since the dance is social. We teach any guy to dance with any girl and rotate partners a lot during classes. So even if there are more girls (boys) than boys (girls), you won’t be bored standing in a corner and longing for a partner. At least, not for long :)

Question: I’d like to take a couple of private classes, but I fear that’s too expensive?

Answer: Contact the teacher and tell him/her what in particular you want, including time and place details. We have flexible prices for private classes, so the result of negotiations may happen to be not so frustrating for you :

Question: Do you have only one place for classes?

Answer: Right at the moment we have two – “Polnolunie” club and the one in Hermitage Garden. But we are in constant search of new spots, so if you notice another one free for leasing at the time that makes your schedule better, just tell us, we'll negotiate.

Question: Do you teach only Lindy Hop? What about other dances?

Answer: We have regular classes in Lindy Hop, Balboa, Charleston and Authentic Jazz. Yes, we teach only swing dance. No, we don’t dance waltz and other non-swing dances. Well, it happened to be this way. But we’re good in swing dancing instead ;)
